About Baker With a Cause

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by! My name is Christyna and I love to bake. I am a mother of two beautiful boys, a wife, and a full time PhD student studying education policy.  I am also an avid reader of food blogs and cookbooks, and a kitchen gadget junkie. My goals with this blog are to share my kitchen adventures with you (both savory and sweet); make a few good friends along the way; and to educate, advocate, and inspire.

Education
Through this blog I want to introduce you to great recipes and help you make that sweat treat, or scrumptious dinner that puts a smile on your family and friends’ faces when you share it with them. Along the way I will share baking and cooking techniques that I’ve picked up from cooking classes, cookbooks, food blogs, and my own trial and error in the kitchen.

Advocacy
I have a passion for food. This zeal for making and eating great food has expanded into a political philosophy that was born when I picked up Michael Pollen’s In Defense of Food, and Alice Waters’ The Art of Simple Food: Notes, Lessons, and Recipes from a Delicious Revolution. Since reading those books the politics of food and food justice have truly permeated me in a way that I could not have foreseen. As a result, I am now an advocate and supporter of local farmers; seasonal eating; the humane and sustainable means of food production; healthy school lunches and the creation of pathways for greater access to nutritious food for underprivileged and marginalized communities; and have a great desire to be a part of shifting the predominant fast and processed food paradigm in the U.S. that promotes bad health and environmental degradation.

Inspiration
My greatest hope with this blog is to inspire you. I will introduce you to farmers, organizations, and businesses that have dedicated themselves to humanely and sustainably bringing consumers the healthiest and tastiest food possible. In turn, I hope that their stories and efforts encourage you to support your own local farmers, businesses, and organizations doing this work in and around your community. I will also sometimes get political on you and talk about the current politics surrounding food in the hopes that it will fire you up to get active around food justice yourself. Finally, and most importantly, I hope that what you see on here inspires you to get to the kitchen and bake or cook for enjoyment and with love for yourself, family, friends, and colleagues.

Thanks again for visiting! Hope to see you around these parts again soon!!

Hi there Christyna! I saw your comment over at Joy The Baker and was intrigued because one of my dearest friends is Puerto Rican, and she has taught me to make some of the traditional DELICIOUS dishes! I admire your purpose here, and I wondered if you were aware that there is now a Food Corps program (www.foodcorps.org). I would have JUMPED at the chance to do something like this when I graduated high school, but no such thing existed at the time. You have the perfect platform to be able to spread the word! I hope to do a post about it soon as well. Best, Sara

      Hi Sara,
Thanks for your comment, and thank you so much for making me aware of this! I didn’t know about Food Corps, and I will definitely do a post about it and spread the word. I noticed they didn’t have any sites in California, and I wonder if there’s a way to connect a site and them here. Hmmm…. my brain is already spinning with the possibilities! Beautiful site yourself, by the way! I love that you have an asopao recipe on there :) Anyway, as soon as I do a post I’ll send you another note. Thanks again!!

Thanks, girl. Well, for the most part, the blog suffers from lack of posts when it gets to be crunch time. I always ask the same question of you, my dear principle, mom, wife, and overall superwoman extraordinaire :)
